I guess everyone has heard that an ostrich’s eye is larger than its brain. What a bummer! Dumb animal. But wait! Maybe that’s what the dumb bird needs – bigger eyes, smaller brain. Wild life is tough and the ostrich needs to avoid predators, search for food/prey or run quickly in case it spots danger. Vision (and strong legs), and not intellect, is what the ostrich needs to take to work.
And what do we need to take to work? Our skills, our talents, our emotional intelligence and our diligence (and lunch). But every once in a while we take our ego to work – we don’t agree enough, we argue because we want to be right, and sometimes we’re rude because we feel superior.
None of this ego helps us make our organisation more successful. But we still have it, much like the less than useful brain of the ostrich. What we need more of is not that ego-infested brain but the larger vision that’ll help us succeed.
So, are you an Ego Ostrich?
